Artist Statement
Lottie Stephens is a ceramic artist originally from Buckinghamshire, UK, currently based in Berlin, Germany.
Her work is deeply inspired by her personal experience of loss, the passage of time, and the process of healing. Recently, Stephens has expanded her practice to include writing alongside ceramics as a way to further explore these themes. The idea of mud/clay—both as a physical material and as a symbol of life and death—has become a central focus in her work, following the passing of her best friend four years ago. This event has prompted her to ask profound questions about mortality, memory, and how these complex emotions can be explored through contemporary art.
Stephens' work navigates the delicate balance between being too explicit and too mysterious when addressing death. Her exploration of loss, trauma, and healing is ongoing, with each piece being a step in her evolving dialogue with grief and recovery.
